THE PURPOSE OF SEXUAL INTERCOURSE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING HUMAN DIGNITY

The primary purpose of sexual intercourse among humans and animals is procreation. For humans who wish to have children biologically, sexual intercourse is essential. Similarly, animals engage in it to reproduce their offspring. A secondary purpose, particularly among humans, is for pleasure or to relieve sexual tension. Whether animals also engage in sexual activity to reduce tension remains a subject of debate. In humans, sexual intercourse intended for procreation must occur during specific times—namely, when a woman is ovulating—to achieve conception. In animals, the female must be in heat to conceive. Instinctively, males recognize when females are in heat, and mating occurs during this period. A key difference between animals and humans in copulation is that animals can mate anywhere and at any time, provided the female is in heat. Humans, on the other hand, generally preserve their dignity by engaging in sexual activity at chosen times and in private settings. Additionally, humans must reach a certain biological maturity to produce viable eggs and sperm necessary for conception. A troubling incident that challenges the dignity of sexual activity involves a young female student from Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, Nigeria, who publicly attributed her academic success to both God and her sexual exploits. This bold and shocking confession, shared in a video on social media, suggests she may have exchanged sex for academic marks or engaged in prostitution to fund her education. Such behavior is a profound degradation of womanhood and runs counter to both the primary and secondary purposes of sex. Sexual activity among humans should be approached with dignity and respect, not reduced to transactional or degrading acts. It is vital to uphold the sanctity of sexual relations, honoring both its biological and emotional significance, rather than allowing it to be debased.

THE TOLL GATE TRAGEDY: A GROWING SAFETY CONCERN IN OTA

Toll Gate is a well-known landmark in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. The area got its name from the toll gate that once existed there during the democratic presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. It is strategically located at the boundary between Lagos State and Ogun State along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. In addition to generating revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure development, the toll gate also helped regulate and monitor traffic moving between the two states. In 2012, during the administration of Ibikunle Amosun, the construction of the Ilo Awela Road was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria.
