THE PRICE OF SACRIFICE: A MOTHER’S BETRAYAL, A SON’S INGRATITUDE, AND THE NEMESIS THAT FOLLOWED.
A mother’s love is often described as unconditional, but what happens when blind sacrifice meets bitter betrayal?
Ten years ago, Agnes lost her husband. He left her with four children - a son, Philip, and three daughters: Vera, Omodiaye, and Sakpoba along with a generous inheritance: a 13-room house with a parlour in the heart of Benin City, Edo State.
The Great Sacrifice
When Philip turned 25, he approached his mother with a grand plan: he wanted to travel to the UK in search of greener pastures. The catch? He needed ₦15 million for his visa, processing, and flight tickets.
Agnes didn’t have that kind of money. In desperation, she decided to sell the 13-room family house, her only safety net and inheritance - to finance her son's dream, hoping he would rebuild the family's fortunes once established abroad.
Her three daughters strongly objected. Vera, Omodiaye, and Sakpoba warned their mother against the risk, expressing fears that Philip might turn his back on the family. But Agnes turned a deaf ear to her daughters' warnings. She sold the property for ₦17 million, handed ₦15 million over to Philip, used the remaining ₦2 million to rent a modest two-bedroom flat, and started a small petty trading business to survive.
From Promise to Abandonment
Initially, Philip kept his word. During his first three years in the UK, he called his mother almost daily and sent monthly stipends. Soon, his wife, Atine, joined him in Birmingham. Both secured resident permits and landed lucrative jobs. Life became rosy. Then, the turning point came. Philip stopped sending monthly upkeep to his 80-year-old mother, leaving her to fend for herself through manual petty trading. The three daughters, still aggrieved that their mother had disregarded their advice and sold their family house, refused to financially support her, leaving the elderly woman isolated.
Cruelly, while Agnes suffered, Philip was busy caring for his mother-in-law and her family in Benin City. He even built a house in his wife’s hometown of Okada, roughly 100 kilometres away.
The Confrontation and the Shocking Accusation
In December 2025, Philip and his wife returned to Nigeria for the Christmas holidays. Instead of visiting his aged mother, he went straight to his newly built house in Okada. When Agnes got wind of his arrival, her heart broke. Furious at his abandonment despite the massive sacrifice she made, she reported him to the police station to seek redress and force him to honour their agreement to replace the sold family home. The police summoned Philip, his wife, and his three sisters. When asked why he abandoned his mother after she sold her only property for his future, Philip dropped a bombshell: he claimed he stopped caring for her because he discovered she was a WITCH! Agnes broke down in tears. His wife, Atine, backed Philip’s claims, stating that Philip struggled during his first two years abroad due to his mother’s alleged "evil machinations." Looking Philip straight in the eye through her tears, the 80-year-old mother uttered a solemn curse: "Whatever you are doing to me today, your children will do it to you multiple times." Everyone present responded with a loud, unanimous "Amen." Her daughters refused to intervene further or demand the ₦15 million refund on their mother's behalf. They maintained that they had warned her years ago and believed Philip was simply brainwashed by his wife to label his mother a witch.
The Aftermath
Fast forward nearly a year later: Philip’s wife, a registered Nurse has long returned to their home in Birmingham. Philip, however, remains stranded in Nigeria, unable to return to the UK due to sudden "irregularities" with his travel papers. Locals in Benin City are divided: One group believes his sudden predicament is the immediate manifestation of his mother's tearful curse and divine judgment. Another group suspects his wife may have played a fast one on him behind the scenes to keep him stranded while she enjoys their life in the UK alone.
Over to You, Dear Readers:
Do you think Agnes’s tears and curse have brought about divine justice, or is Philip simply a victim of paper/immigration issues? Could his wife, Atine, be behind his current situation in Nigeria? What steps can Philip take to remedy this ugly situation and redeem himself before it’s too late?

Sure. A child who dishonors his parents especially his mother will have the gods of the land to contend with. Thanks for this great lesson
